About Our School “The Little School with a Heart”

PS 228, an Early Childhood School of the Arts, offers specialized, developmentally appropriate academic and arts programs for all students. Pre-K - 2 students benefit from a nurturing school community and enriched learning environments. Our students develop a strong early learning foundation by belonging to class communities that emphasize social emotional learning (SEL) and values education. All of our students are offered a unique character education program, infused into the content areas. We integrate literature, music, visual and performance arts to celebrate the uniqueness of each child. Through culturally responsive teaching and an advanced Literacy curriculum, students become critical thinkers and independent learners. Class offerings include Dual language, integrated co-teaching, monolingual, ESL and self-contained special education classes to meet the needs of all learners. STEAM learning experiences enable our youngest learners to utilize technology while gaining appreciation and understanding of Science and Mathematics. This “Little School with a Heart” is the ideal place for young children to grow, learn and be nurtured.

We celebrate the uniqueness of each child through culturally responsive education integrating all subject areas with a wealth of literature, music, poetry, dramatic performance arts and visual arts. Our comprehensive Advanced Literacy curriculum, infused with Science and Technology (STEAM), prepares our children for college and future careers.

Student Mission Statement

We are special and we can do great things. Our mission is to work with out teachers, parents and classmates to meet the standards. We will do our best every day as we learn through the Arts and Technology.

Uniform Policy

Our uniform policy was established when we first open our doors in 2001.The SLT members met and made a decision that children will adhere to the following uniform policy: White shirt, plaid or navy blue pants/skirt/jumper with matching tie. Each year the SLT votes to continue or discontinue this policy.

Our model integrates four core strategies for concrete change that millions of families feel every day:

·      Legal and Survival Services to tackle discrimination, abuse and poverty;

·      Transformative Education to develop community members’ abilities to lead our organization, our movement, and society;

·      Community Organizing to transform the systems and power structures impacting our communities; and

·      Policy Innovation to rewrite unjust rules and make our democracy truly accountable to all of us.

Staff and members repeat a common refrain: “Make the Road is my second home.” Regardless of immigration status, race, or gender identity, all find safety, support, and solidarity here. Everyone who comes with an individual story of abuse and exploitation finds that they are not alone – that in collectivizing our experiences and voices, we can build the power to change not just one case, but entire systems.
