What is Brighter Bites?

Brighter Bites is a theory-driven, evidence-based program that purposefully channels produce from local food banks into low-income families and combines it with hands-on education in school and for parents.  The program allows teachers to teach students healthier eating choices and to explore different types of fruits and vegetables.  Our teachers allow students to analyze different vegetables and fruits using their five senses.  Students are then asked to complete a writing response to the activity.  Teachers have done different types of lessons where they compare and contrast different types of fruits and vegetables, they have worked on using key words/vocabulary to help them inform their readers about the fruits and vegetables, and some teachers even make recipes with the students.  Brighter bites offers students the opportunity to increase their oral language communication skills, knowledge of healthy eating, and builds vocabulary.

The Vision Zero Action Plan was released in 2014 and outlined 63 separate initiatives that the Mayor's Office and a number of City Agencies are undertaking to reduce death and serious injury on our streets. Vision Zero includes a comprehensive outreach plan which targets institutions such as schools, religious centers, and community based organizations to spread educational information. The Department of Transportation (DOT) has an entire division dedicated to educating people using all modes to travel safely and respectfully. With the help of the Office of Safety and Youth Development at the Department of Education and working closely with the New York City Police Department (NYPD), these Safety Educators will go to over 300 schools each academic year. An additional 200 schools will be visited by our assembly programs, a more interactive and exciting way for children to learn about street safety. Curriculum has been developed for students Kindergarten through 12th Grade. Pre-K classes are conducted for parents and caregivers.

In the CHAMPS Sports and Fitness Program, students participate in fun, safe, and supervised sports and fitness activities before and after school. The name CHAMPS stands for Cooperative, Healthy, Active, Motivated and Positive Students. Participating in CHAMPS can help students: Stay active, learn new sports and fitness activities that they can continue beyond their school years, and learn how to work as a team and collaborate with others.  Students who are physically active and fit do better in school.  Physical activity is important for fitness and strength, healthy weight, and lifelong health. Children aged 6–7 should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day, according to national guidelines.  Students can participate in activities in fall, winter, and spring seasons. Teacher-coaches supervise activities at their schools, and at DOE-approved gyms and parks. Principals apply for and oversee the CHAMPS program at their school. Schools select the activities they will offer.  Parents, families, and friends are welcome to attend seasonal showcases and other events held throughout the City.
